On Monday October 22nd at 7pmJohn Birmingham will be at Riverbend to discuss his essay in the latest issue of Australian Foreign Affairs,
Defending Australia.

John will be joined on stage with AFA editor, Jonathan Pearlman and Steve Austin of ABC radio to talk about his essay, which which analyses Australia’s weapons capabilities and how they compare to those of our
Asian allies.

About the authors…

John Birmingham is the author of the cult classic He Died With a Falafel in His Hand; the award-winning history Leviathan; theAxis of Time series, and many more. Between writing books he contributes to a wide range of newspapers and magazines on topics as diverse as the future of media and national security. Before becoming a writer he began his working life as a research officer with the Defence Department's Office of Special Clearances and Records.

Jonathan Pearlman is the editor of Australian Foreign Affairs and is a correspondent for The Telegraph (UK) and The Straits Times newspaper (Singapore). He previously worked at The Sydney Morning Herald, covering foreign affairs and politics from Canberra and Sydney. He has worked as a correspondent in the Middle East, as well as covering various international stories, including the 2008 US election and the violence in eastern Congo. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Diplomat magazine, Good Weekendmagazine, and Australian Book Review, and he has been a Walkley Award finalist and United Nations Media Award winner. He was born in Sydney and studied at the University of New South Wales and Oxford University.
