18 NOV 6.30pm - Heather Morris

from 10.00

Join us at 6.30pm on Monday 18th November at 6.30pm as Heather Morris speaks about her new novel Cilka's Journey, the sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Cilka’s Journey centres on Cilka Klein, one of the key characters from The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the teenage girl who saved Lale Sokolov’s life. Sokolov told Heather that Cilka was ‘the bravest person’ he ever met. ‘Not the bravest girl,’ he insisted, ‘the bravest person.’

Whenever Heather Morris talks about The Tattooist, and in almost all of the thousands of letters and emails she receives from readers, people want to know what happened to Cilka. The answer is heart-breaking. Selected on her arrival at Auschwitz by the commandant of Birkenau because of her beautiful long hair, the sixteen-year-old was forced to do what he told her. On liberation, and still only nineteen, she was charged by the Russians as a collaborator. Once again, Cilka found herself on a train, this time destined for the Siberian gulags.

In this new prison, Cilka faced challenges both new and horribly familiar, including the unwanted attention of the guards. But Cilka also began to tend to the ill in the camp, struggling to care for them under brutal conditions. In the gulag Cilka daily confronted death and faced terror. Incredibly, she also found love and a long life.
